Mythocracy: conspiratorial politics and culture in the United States (1933-1990)

In this study, we will create a comprehensive chronology of conspiracy theories from the early 1930s to the late 1990s. This will then enable us to develop the first comprehensive typology of conspiracy theories. This initial research will provide the overview needed to analyze the narrative evolution of conspiracy theories over the chosen period. This will give us the opportunity to study the changing and interdependent dynamics at work between conspiracy theorists, the ruling class and the American people's understanding of politics. As there would be no conspiracy theories without the individuals who create and disseminate them, a large part of our study will interrogate belief in conspiracy theories, not to discover the mechanisms that lead them down the conspirators' rabbit hole, but rather to examine what conspiracy theorists get out of it - which will constitute an entirely new approach. Another aspect of this study will determine the extent to which conspiracy theories have permeated not only American politics, but also culture as a whole, through the analysis of literary, cinematic and televisual works. Finally, we propose an original analysis of conspiracy theories as an American societal substitute for the mythological narratives that nourish the imagination of other eras and cultural spheres, such as those of ancient Greece.
