In 1763, the « Expedition of Kourou » had the purpose of peopling French Guiana. The goal was to make this, the last French colony on the American continent, a response to British domination in North America. For instance, 20 000 people- equivalent to the population of New York-were supposed to settle the colony. The criteria of recruitment reveal the system of recruitment, particularly from the Rhine valley. This report underlines the impact of the image of « America » on European populations.
